A fun cooking activity to make with your kids, these Stars and Stripes Toasts are the perfect Fourth of July breakfast. Cream cheese, jam, and tons of fresh fruit sit atop thick slices of multigrain toast, decorated to look like stars and stripes. This is a hearty, healthy dish that will leave everyone with a smile on their face.
Put 4 oz of cream cheese in a bowl. Whip the cream cheese with a fork until it is looser and spreadable.
Wash and dry 1 cup of blueberries, 1 cup of strawberries, and 1 cup of raspberries.
Cut the tops off of the strawberries and then slice them into little pieces.
Slice the banana into half-moon rounds. Set aside.
Toast 6 pieces of bread on a sheet pan if using the broiler or the toaster.
If using the broiler, toast at the lowest heat setting for 1-2 minutes on each side.
With 2-3 pieces of bread, cut out stars from the bread.
Spread the cream cheese on the toast.
Add jam and decorate with fresh fruit.
Enjoy!
Notes
If you use the broiler, be careful not to burn your bread. I like using the broiler because I can toast many more slices of bread at one time. But even on the lowest heat setting the broiler can easily burn your toast, so watch it carefully. The cream cheese should be at room temperature when you use it — it makes whipping it for spreading a lot easier. You can use any jam or jelly you want, but it needs to be red in color — a strawberry, raspberry, or cherry jam is perfect. Also, I like multigrain bread because it has a little extra flavor and crunch. Whole wheat bread would be a good substitution, but if your kids only eat white bread, just use the bread they like.If you use the cookie cutter, do not try to cut out the toast — the bread will smash down. Instead, use your small knife to cut around the star. Think of it as a creative way to take off the crusts of bread for your picky eaters!
